ABOUT US

"It takes a village to raise a child" is an Igbo and Yoruba proverb that exists in many different African languages. It reflects the emphasis African cultures place on family and community. At the Children's Initiative we work to bring the village together to raise all children and youth in San Diego County.

The mission of the Children’s Initiative is to help San Diego County’s low-income children, youth and families thrive and prosper.  For more than 20 years, the Children’s Initiative has served as an advocate and custodian for effective policies, programs, and services that support the education, health, safety and well-being of children and families in San Diego County.

The staff and the management team at the Children’s Initiative are committed and prepared to improve the lives of children, youth and families in San Diego County. We are motivated, energetic, and filled with purpose to make San Diego a great place for all residents.

The Children’s Initiative Board of Directors is committed to provide leadership, guidance and support to the work of the Children’s Initiative. Through their professional careers and in their volunteer roles, they work tirelessly to improve the lives of children and families in San Diego County.

The Children's Initiative was established in 1992, by five local San Diego foundations and more than 40 community and public leaders, to serve as an advocate and custodian for effective policies, programs and services that support the health and well-being of children, youth and families in San Diego County.
